PENANG BRIDGE INTERNATIONAL MARATHON 2010

.

It was an anti-climax to actually re-checked and saw my BIB REGISTRATION for Penang Bridge International Marathon was for 10km run instead of the planned 21km half marathon. Some miscommunication or misunderstanding in registration but I was all excited again when Lilian Lee said she has extra 21km men's bib from her friend whom FFK'ed the last minute.

We left KL and drove to Penang in a convoy of 2 cars after the Saturday trial session at ORIGINAL BOOTCAMP @ USJ1. OBC @ USJ1 was launched on 18 November 2010 with the same energy and hyper-active trainers and recruits from OBC-BU. Both OBC-USJ1 & BU is open for online registration at www.hooyah.com.my. All registration must be submitted online.

There were 24 of us from OBC @ BU & OBC @ USJ1 that ran the PENANG BRIDGE INTERNATIONAL MARATHON 2010. There were Nawal Aini Zulkifli, Rose Emini Pahamin, Selly Selina, Ilyanna Aylin Ayob, Armin Baniaz Pahamin, Chun Chia Kai, Daing Daniel Fitri @Sarge Dann, Ody Nurfuadi Ruzalli,  Rienna Choo, Syed Mahadzir Syed Manshor, Ryan Wong, Lilian Lee, Nyna Mohsen, Farhanah Bamadhaj, lizza Abdul Rahim,  Suriana Saiful, Amy Ho, Joe Liew, Yvonne Chen Ling Sze, Azlan Ramli, Norliza Affandi, Baharian Bahadom and Freda Liu. LIzza Abdul Rahim did not plan to run but she could not resist the temptation when Natassya Lee gave Lizza her 10km bib. Natassya Lee.. somehow... FFK'ed too. My 10km bib was given to Azlan Ramli when I took Lilian Lee friend's 21km bib.

The 2 car convoy that left with me comprised of Rose Emini Pahamin, Nawal Aini Zulkifli, Syed Mahadzir Syed Manshor and Aaraf Eid Pahamin in my car and Azlan Ramli, Lizza Abdul Rahim, Farhanah Bamadhaj, Suriana Saiful Yazan, Chun Chia Kai in Azlan Ramli's Alphard.

Ilyanna Aylin Ayob, Selly Selina, Bahariah Bahadom left earlier at 8am with Ilyanna's car. While Sarge Dann & Ody convoyed with Lilian Lee yesterday and Ryan Wong together with Lizza Affandi and kids left at 6pm.

Yvonne Chen Ling Sze whom were suppose to leave with her friends to Penang on Saturday morning had to cancel her trip when her friend whom was waiting in her Honda infront of Yvone's house was hijacked and robbed by 3 Indians armed with Parang. The three Indians almost forced Yvonne's friend  into the car but sped away when her friend put up a fight. We felt sorry for Yvonne and her friends but are thankful that Yvonne Chen is unharm and safe.

Break stop-over @ Tapah.
The journey to Penang took us almost 4 hours with a stop for coffee at Tapah.

At Tapah, we... Mm.. err.. had the first carbo-loading with Chicken Pau, Beef Pau and Beans Pau. Syed Mahadzir Syed Manshor had Chicken Rice and others.. some junk food.

After a short 30 minutes break, we continued the journey and my co-pilot 'Captain' Syed Mahadzir drove the car from Tapah all the way to Penang.

When we arrived in Penang, we head straight to the Capati Duck restaurant near masjid Keling to carbo load... okay again, for the race. We had.. err only 2 pieces of capati each before going for infamous 2 bowl of Cendol at Penang Road.

The capati is to die for!!!! the duck was spoon-licking good. After the second carbo-load, we left to the Equatorial Hotel to meet Sarge Dann @ Daing Daniel Fitri, Lilian Lee & Joe Liew. Due to lodging constrain, we were all split into a few places.

After meeting the three of them at Equatorial Hotel, we left to Cititel to meet Ilyanna Aylin Ayob, Bahariah Bahadom, Selly Selina and Shazlina. At Cititel hotel, we walked for the infamous Penang Road CHENDOL... and had the 3rd Carbo loading!!

When we were done with the Chendol, we drove to Gurney Drive for fourth carbo loading with ... err.. Nasi Lemak, Kuay teow Goreng, Laksa asam and rojak. Okaay.. i know.. abit too much but we have a 21km race in a few hours.

Finally, we left 'food' for Abu Lais Walli Mohamed's weekend apartment at Batu Feringghi (5 minutes away from Hard ROck Hotel) and had an early sleep. There were 10 of us in the 1,200 square feet apartment but it felt so comfortable and cozy. Chun Chia Kai left earlier at 12 midnight for his 42km race that was scheduled to start at 2am. We woke up at 1am and left to Queensbay Mall, (the starting position for all races) at 2am for the 3am starting time for 21km race. Lizza Abdul Rahim left at 5am for her 6am starting time for 10km race.

We were half awake with barely 3 hours of sleep. The men 21km was flagged off at 3am while the women 21km flagged off at 3:15am. The 10km runners were all flagged off at 6am.

The race was well organised with sufficient water at the water station. They even supply bread!! on making a U-turn at the bridge marking the 10km point, we hear the sound of thunder. A moment later we were running under a heavy storm. This was the first experience running at 3 in the morning under a heavy storm but it felt good. The cold, the wind and the rain warmed down the body's temperature.

On the approximate 15km, Nawal Aini Zulkifli whom started running 15 minutes after the men, over-took me. She was flying fast against the strong cross-wind while i was limping from knee-pain.

I completed the race in 2:44 minutes which was my average time. Nawal Aini Zulkifli completed her 21km in 2:13hours. Her PB was 2:05hours but there was nothing to be shameful. The strong cross-wind and the storm could have slowed down the pace.

There first time 21km runners in our group that ran the PBIM 2010 were:
1) Daing Daniel Fitri @Sarge Dann (21km @ 1:51:22)
2) Ody Nurfuadi Ruzalli (21km @ 2:21)
3) Joe Liew (21km @ 2:17:02)
4) Ryan Wong (21km @2:48:49)
5) Lilian Lee (21km @ 2:21)
6) Bahariah Bahadom (21km @ 3:23:19)

All the first time runners clocked a very good timing for their maiden 21km race!!! Chun Chia Kai the only full marathoner in our Group for PBIM 2010 clocked 4:54:15. Other 21km runners from our group were Rose Emini Pahamin (21km @ 2:35), Selly Selina (21km 2:22), Ilyanna Aylin Ayob (21km @ 2:21:13), Yum Kin Kok (21km @ 1:51:43), Syed Mahadzir Syed Manshor (21km @ 2:37:56).

The 10km runners in our group were Rienna Choo (10km @ 1:07 PB), Lizza Abdul Rahim (10km @ 1:23 PB!!), Amy Ho (10km @ 1:07), Norliza Mohd Khalid (10km @ 0:52:04 PB!!) and Freda Liu (10km 1:07:11).

Lilian Lee ran the PBIM race in memory of her late mother
21 November is not just a memorable moment to the Virgin 21km & 10km runners having completed their maiden race but the date was more than just a race to Lilian Lee. Lilian completed her first 21km race in a good 2 hours 21minutes and she did it all for her mum whom passed away exactly 10 years ago!! Her mum was born on the same date 21 November in Penang and passed away on 3 March 2000. Lilian Lee ran the race in memory of her late mother. May god bless her.
