MAYBANK BALI INTERNATIONAL MARATHON 2012

We were faced with various obstacles to run the race in Bali with the earthquake in Indonesia, bad pollution from the open fire burning, the driver-supir 1 hour late-arrival to pick us up at the Villa, the hot sun, the heat, the humid weather... Oh the list was endless but despite all that, we successfully conquered the Maybank Bali International Marathon 2012.

A troop of 12 from the Chief's Original Bootcamp left for Denpasar, Bali in three batches over the weekend. The first to arrive was Afiza Abdul Halin that took the 9am, Malaysian Airlines Flight on Friday, 20 April 2012. The same day, Caleb Lian Yoong Lauw and Angela Loo left at 3:45pm by Airasia and Shazni Zubir, Affik Zaki and Maslina Ahmad Ismail departed via Airasia at 6pm flight. On Saturday, Dalyn Nunis arrived shortly before ours. Our flight comprised of Nawal Aini Zulkifli, Aaraf Armin and me. Micaela Soyza and Sheikh Hisham were the last in that arrived on Sunday.

We stayed at the Villa Rumah Santai at Seminyak.

Coincidentally or maybe purposely, the eve before our arrival on 20th April was Maslina Ahmad Ismail's birthday which Shazny Zubir, Affik Zaki and Afiza Abdul Halin had extended a special birthday Slamdunk present!!

Maslina Ahmad Ismail
Maslina Ahmad Ismail was carried and slamdunk'ed straight into our Villa's private pool. Our four bedroom villa was perfect for such a slamdunk and our Shazni Zubir, Afik Zaki and Afiza Abdul Halin did not even hesitate.

No one was spared even when Angela Loo had already had her pre-sleep layers of lotion

We arrived and missed the first slamdunk session!! but we were surprised when everbody came to pick us up at the airport.!!

At the airport... we were surprised by the whole platoon that came to pick us up
left: Shazni Zubir, Maslina Ahmad Ismail, Armin Baniaz Pahamin Nasal Aini Zulkifli, Dalyn Nunis, Angela Loo, Affik Zaki and Caleb Lian Yoong Lauw

and straight to MAKANSUTRA!!! Nasi Padang!! Carbo Loading - part 1.

600,000 can buy us a decent bungalow in Malaysia but in Bali it is worth just Nasi Padang for 9 pax.

Then a walk at the Kuta Beach for sunset...

After Sunset at the beach, we went carbo loading with pasta and pizza.. Makansutra Part 2

After only 2 sets of carbo loading, we retired for the night and woke up at 3am for our first mission!!! After a short que to the small room we were all ready to rumble!!!

Dalyn Nunis carbo load first with bread + nutella!!

Others were all thumbs up!!

Now ready!!!!

but had to wait for 1 hour when our van driver was late ... Grrrr

Our driver was 1 hour late and we left our Villa at 4:30am for the scheduled flag-off at 5:30am. We arrived 10 minutes before flag-off and met COBC Delta Ryan Wong and Stephanie Choong at the venue. They stayed at the Safari Hotel and had arrived earlier.

We were flagged-off at 5:30am and the run felt heavy at the start due to the pollution from the open burning smoke and exhaust fumes from bad passingby traffic. Fortunately I was able to change my registration from a full marathon to a half marathon. After a few kilometers, I was mesmerized at how the whole town came out to cheer and support!! There were cultural shows at every 5km!! The whole locals came out and que by the roadside and cheer us up! School children and kids were in their traditional costume and they were screaming and shouting in a well orchestrated tune.. Indonesia, Indonesia, Indonesia... I was overwhelmed at their patriotism.

After we escaped the starting route via the polluted highway, we ran through the villages.. We were shocked and mesmerize by the treatment from the locals.. everyone came out to cheer waving flags and balloons.. We all felt like a real celebrities...

The scenery was beautiful.. The people were beautiful.. the town was beautiful!! I felt so privileged!

Every 5km, there are some form of cultural show.. there were even kerbau-dance.. err Bull Dance, the Indonesian version of the chinese Lion Dance.

Deep in the village, there were even Keluarga Mas's Futsal Planet!!

there also some historical/legendary dances and show.. (though it looks a bit scary to me)

At one point, I felt like I was a celebrity and about to start a concert.. the children did a good job cheering and motivating us!! At another point, I felt like I was at the center of a general election campaign. I was running all the way behind this girl in red vest and yellow shorts.. somehow, she ran at a slightly better speed for me to pace. I think I was seeing things too, I was seeing Rienna Choo lookalike, Freda Liu, May Lyn Wong, some of the guys look at lot like John Chuah.. at one point after the finishing line, I pointed to Maslina Ahmad Ismail & Dalyn Nunis.. a lady that look alot like Rienna Choo.

Our 21km route was as per the map below (click on picture to enlarge).

Our beautiful and hard-earned finisher medal!!

I completed the race in 2hrs 19 minutes according to Nike Plus GPS below but the time recorded by Afiza Abdul Halin was 2hr : 23mins

After the run, we... err.. of course.. camwhore abit...

Maslina's 1st 21km race!! with Dalyn Nunis

What is the odd of asking a passerby to be our papparazzi only to discover that she is also a Malaysian!! Our adjunct cameraman Wei Ann Ng!!!

Then we met Ryan Wong whom just completed his run.

Maslina  carrying Nawal Aini in happiness having completed her first 21km race with a bad blister on her feet!

Spotted!!! A former colleague from the Commerce International Merchant Bankers Berhad (Now known as CIMB Investment Bank), Jack Fong Wai Leong running his second 21km race!! When we were at the Merchant Bank in the mid 1990s, Jack was an avid runner whom with many other colleagues went running at the lake club every evening before continuing our work back at the office. Those were the days when working hours was from 7am to way passed midnight.. daily, 7 days a week. Everytime he went running with dozens of others from the office, I would adamantly declined .. I hated running!!

Jack Fong Wai Leong

After the run, we squeezed into the van with our strong natural odor!!

and we had some super power nap in the van!!

and the soonest we are back at the villa.. we err.. slamdunk everyone including ourselves and played in pool under the heat and hot sun! The culprit was the MIB (Man In Black) hiding behind.. he, Maslina Ahmad Ismail, AARAF ARMIN and others tricked by calling me out from my blogging-sphere and the soonest I stood out, Shazni Zubir & Maslina quickly pushed me into the water.. but I held and pull Maslina along (padan muka)..

After that.. all hell broke loose under the hot sun!!

When slamdunking gets bored, they became more adventurous..
and climbed up the wall to jump higher and higher!!

While some played with water.. some play with.. err..

I got Aaraf to start doing pushups and situps too..

After Aaraf did his superset abs,.. he was allowed to play.. and he really really enjoyed!!

No wonder Aaraf was having fun.. he was flirting with Afiza!! Iiiisk

Guess... who's legs belong to whom?

We played under the hot sun all day but stopped earlier for a deep relaxing massage!! We squeezed all us 13 pax (excluding the driver) into the van and headed straight to the best massage in Bali..

It was Aaraf's first visit to a massage parlour!!!

When we felt fresh from the massage, our tummy were crying for makan!!! and we left for Blue Marlin at jimbangan (spell??)

We pick and choose our own fresh fishes and seafood..

They freshly grill eat...

and serve hot and fresh!!! mamamiaaaa..

Err.. sorry, we ate all other menu before taking any picture!!! STARVING!!!!

After conquering the Maybank Bali International Half Marathon and 2 nights in Bali.. with one whole day session in the pool to slamdunk everyone again and again... and various makan and makansutra session, good things must come to an end...  it was time to leave.. Our flight was the first flight back home. Others will stay back for a week until Friday.

Bidding farewell...

someone slept all the way to the airport, flight and journey back home!!

While we had safely arrived back home in Kuala Lumpur, the gang were happily hanging around bali..

Next run will be the BOMBA run 2012 next week on 6 May 2012. Until then, if you had a good read and a good time in Bali.. give me a big hooyah in the count of 3..2..1..

HOOYAH!!!
